Seven quiet signs a parent may need help at home

Most families do not notice a single big change. They notice a lot of small ones. These are the ones worth paying attention to.

Parents rarely announce that they need help. More often, the signs are quiet and easy to explain away. Noticing them early makes it far more likely that support starts before a fall, a hospital stay or a crisis forces the decision.

What to look for

  • The fridge has less fresh food in it than it used to, or food past its date
  • The house is less tidy, or the same chores keep being put off
  • Weight loss, or clothes that no longer fit well
  • Unopened mail, missed bills or confusion about appointments
  • Bruises or a reluctance to talk about a recent fall
  • Medication that is not being taken as prescribed
  • Withdrawing from friends, church or activities they once enjoyed

What to do next

Start with a conversation, not a plan. Ask what is getting harder and what they would most like help with. Then book a GP visit to rule out anything medical, and register with My Aged Care so an assessment can be arranged.

If you would like to talk it through with someone who does this every day, our Care Manager is happy to have a no-obligation chat.

Next step

Let's talk about the care you need

A short, no-obligation conversation with our Care Manager is the best place to start. We will listen first, then tell you honestly what we can do.
